Artwork Requirements

Files Explained
  • Adobe Illustrator Artwork (AI) is a proprietary file format developed by Adobe Systems for representing single-page vector-based drawings in either the EPS or PDF formats. The .ai filename extension is used by Adobe Illustrator.

  • An EPS is an Encapsulated PostScript file. This is an image encoded using the PostScript page description language, and is typically embedded within a larger document created by a page layout or illustration program. A PostScript-compatible printer or interpreter is necessary to correctly print EPS files.

  • Vector files: sometimes called a geometric file, most images created with tools such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw are in the form of vector image files. Vector image files are easier to modify than raster image files (which can, however, sometimes be reconverted to vector files for further refinement).

  • A spot color is any color generated by an ink (pure or mixed) that is printed using a single run.

When making a multi-color print with a spot color process, every spot color needs its own lithographic film. All the areas of the same spot color are printed using the same film, hence, using the same lithographic plate. The dot gain, hence the screen angle and line frequency, of a spot color vary according to its intended purpose. Spot lamination and UV coatings are sometimes referred to as 'spot colors', as they share the characteristics of requiring a separate lithographic film and print run.

Customers are always asking us, what is the best method to submit finished artwork to screen print or embroider my items? The answer to this question can be quite extensive, however to achieve good printing results these minimum requirements should be met. If your files do not meet these specifications, then your file may be rejected. If you would like us to correct the file, there will be an additional artwork charge. In rare instances, there are some artwork files that we cannot edit or fix. We will provide you with a digital proof, but there is to be expected a + or - difference of color from the actual final product. Be aware that all computer monitors do not display consistent color from one to the other.

Note: When creating artwork for screen printing, designs with SPOT COLORS work best. (If the art incorporates process colors, a slight shift in color is to be expected, due to the nature of the printing process).

Hand Rendered Art Requirements:

Hand rendered, or drawn line art can often be scanned and printed if the lines are clean and in black ink. Art will need to be evaluated for reproduction quality.

Computer Generated Vector Art Requirements:
